Who should use this calculator
This free calculator is intended for freelancers, sole traders, contractors and small-business owners who need a quick planning figure before preparing or checking an invoice. It can also help clients and bookkeepers understand the arithmetic behind a quoted amount. Use the result as a review aid alongside the relevant agreement, source records and current official guidance, not as an automatic accounting or legal decision.
Calculator methodology
Cars and vans use one rate for the first 10,000 business miles and another above that threshold. Other supported vehicles use a flat rate.
This is general information, not tax, legal or accounting advice.
Worked example
A sole trader records 10,001 qualifying business miles by car in the relevant tax year. The first 10,000 miles at 55p produce £5,500, and the additional mile at 25p produces 25p, for an indicative total of £5,500.25. A mileage log should support the dates, destinations, purpose and distance.
Important limitations
Use cumulative qualifying business mileage for the tax year, not the mileage of one journey alone. Commuting and private travel are not automatically business mileage, and company-car, passenger, employer reimbursement or actual-cost rules can differ. The calculator does not test eligibility or replace a contemporaneous journey log. Confirm the tax year and current HMRC rate.
